Course overview
It won’t be long until self-driving cars are a part of our every-day lives, but what they can’t do is make or repair themselves.
With over 39 million vehicles registered for use on UK roads, this means that there is and always will be a huge demand for mechanics and vehicle technicians.
Practical skills and logical thinking are required in the industry, along with patience and a determination to succeed.
What will I do?
Level 1
You’ll work through a range of practical modules in motor vehicle and employability skills.
Level 2
You’ll go deeper into motor vehicle systems. You’ll learn about health and safety, how to use tools and materials properly, and explore different jobs in the motor trade. You’ll also study how electrical components, chassis systems, and engines work, and get hands-on experience working with real parts and equipment.
What’s next?
- After Level 1: You can move on to a Level 2 course and continue developing your practical and academic skills.
- After Level 2 Certificate: You may move to the Level 2 Diploma or, in some cases, go straight to Level 3 if you’re ready.
- After Level 2 Diploma: You can apply for Level 3 or start looking for an apprenticeship or job in the industry.
Is it for me?
You must have a keen interest in motor vehicles and a desire to learn how they work as well as how to maintain and repair them. You will be supported to gain the required study skills, as well as practical and theoretical knowledge within our motor vehicle workshops. You will get to grips with the equipment used in the industry, preparing to put what you learn into practice.
Entry requirements
- Level 1: Minimum of GCSE Grade 2 in English and Maths
- Level 2 Certificate: Minimum of GCSE Grade 3 in English and Maths
- Level 2 Diploma: Minimum of GCSE Grade 4 in either English or Maths, and at least a 3 in the other. A Grade 3 in Science is also helpful.
How will my progress be monitored?
You’ll have regular reviews with your tutor to check how you’re doing. You’ll get feedback on your written work and practical tasks, and targets will be set to help you improve.
How will I be assessed?
Level 1: No motor vehicle exams, but you’ll complete written assignments and regular knowledge checks.
Level 2: You’ll do practical tasks, online tests, and complete a digital portfolio of your work.
Work Experience
Level 2 students must complete 35 hours of work experience during the course. We have strong links with garages like Honda and Mercedes, but you’ll also be expected to actively look for your own placement to show independence and commitment.
